Chelsea have revealed the circumstances behind the departure of their former head coach, admitting the 2025/26 campaign was “hugely disappointing” for both the club and its supporters.
In a statement, the Blues said the turmoil caused by a mid-season managerial change played a significant role in their struggles, prompting the club to explain why the former manager left Stamford Bridge on 1 January 2026.
According to Chelsea, the coach informed club officials during the autumn that he could have the opportunity to succeed Pep Guardiola at Manchester City at the end of the season. The club said it quickly became clear that he was determined to pursue the role, despite being tied to a long-term contract.
Chelsea added that the situation came to a head in December 2025 when the coach unexpectedly resigned. The club admitted it felt deeply disappointed, believing his focus had shifted to another club just a year after taking charge at Stamford Bridge.
While acknowledging that no club wants to replace a manager in the middle of a season, Chelsea said it had no alternative but to accept his resignation in order to protect the players, supporters, and the club’s identity.
The club also confirmed that confidential compensation agreements have been reached with both Manchester City and the former head coach, bringing the matter to a close.
Looking ahead, Chelsea expressed full confidence in new manager Xabi Alonso, describing him as “an exceptional football mind” and “a professional of the highest integrity.” The club believes Alonso has the qualities needed to restore Chelsea to success and deliver the results supporters expect.
