Six people have lost their lives in a tragic road accident involving a military gun truck and a commercial Hummer bus along the Narehi axis of the Girei–Song Road in Adamawa State.
The fatal crash occurred on Wednesday afternoon at about 1:50 p.m. when the military vehicle, which was travelling from Gombi to Yola, collided head-on with a commercial bus heading from Yola to Mubi.
According to the Adamawa State Police Command, the force of the collision caused the bus to overturn before it burst into flames. The five passengers on board were trapped inside the vehicle and were burnt beyond recognition.
Police authorities revealed that preliminary investigations showed that four of the victims were National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members serving in Adamawa State.
Two of the corps members have been identified as Suleiman Juliet and Usman Shuaibu, both from Kaduna State. Efforts are ongoing to identify the remaining victims and notify their families.
The police also confirmed that a soldier travelling in the military vehicle died as a result of injuries sustained in the accident, bringing the total death toll to six.
Following the incident, police officers and emergency responders rushed to the scene to carry out rescue and recovery operations. The bodies of the deceased were later evacuated to the Specialist Hospital in Yola.
Reacting to the tragedy, the Commissioner of Police in Adamawa State, Kabir Umar Hassan, expressed deep sympathy to the families of the victims, the Nigerian Armed Forces, the NYSC, and everyone affected by the devastating incident.
He described the accident as heartbreaking and assured the public that a full investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances that led to the crash.
Authorities say further information will be made available as investigations continue.
