President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has signed the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) Act 2026 into law, marking a major milestone in Nigeria’s drive toward a modern, secure, and digitally enabled identity system.
Announcing the development, President Tinubu said the new legislation replaces a legal framework that had governed Nigeria’s identity management system for nearly two decades.
“Today, I signed the NIMC Act 2026 into law. For nearly twenty years, Nigeria’s identity system operated under a law written for a different era. That era is over,” the President stated.
According to him, the new Act establishes a modern and secure digital identity framework designed to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving economy and strengthen service delivery across the country.
President Tinubu added that the legislation is a critical step in supporting his administration’s vision of transforming Nigeria into a one-trillion-dollar economy through digital innovation, improved governance, and inclusive economic growth.
