Video: Student, 21, Dies After Being Launched From Bridge Without Safety Rope in Brazil

Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, 21, has died after falling approximately 40 metres (131 feet) from a bridge during a rope-jumping activity in Limeira, São Paulo, Brazil.

According to Brazilian authorities, Maria was preparing to perform a jump from the Ponte do Esqueleto, commonly known as the “Skeleton Bridge,” when organizers allegedly launched her in a “Superman” position without securing the main safety rope.

Witnesses say people nearby noticed the rope hanging loose and began shouting warnings moments before she was released. Seconds later, Maria plunged from the bridge.

Emergency responders were called to the scene, but she did not survive the fall.

Police have arrested three men in connection with the incident. Investigators say the rope-jumping operation was being run by an informal group rather than a licensed company and had no authorization to conduct activities at the site.

Authorities allege that basic safety checks were not carried out before the jump and that no one verified whether the main rope was attached to the participant.

The tragedy has sparked outrage across Brazil, raising serious questions about safety standards, accountability, and the risks of unregulated adventure activities.

They were never authorized. They were never regulated. They were never stopped.

And for Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, that failure proved fatal.
