Tottenham Hotspur have completed the signing of Scotland captain Andy Robertson on a free transfer after his departure from Liverpool.
The experienced left-back, 32, will officially join Spurs on 1 July after his contract with Liverpool expires this summer. Robertson had previously confirmed that he would be leaving Anfield at the end of the season, bringing an end to a highly successful eight-year spell with the club.
Tottenham had shown strong interest in Robertson earlier in the year. Under former manager Thomas Frank, the club attempted to secure his signature during the January transfer window, and an agreement was reportedly reached between the two clubs. However, the move fell through after Liverpool decided against letting him leave, having failed to bring back Kostas Tsimikas from his loan spell at Roma.
Spurs eventually secured their Premier League status on the final day of the season with a crucial victory over Everton. The result marked a positive end to the campaign under new manager Roberto De Zerbi, who has now added Robertson’s experience and leadership to his squad.
Speaking about the signing, De Zerbi praised the Scotland international’s qualities, describing him as a player he has admired for many years.
“Andy brings exceptional technical ability, leadership, experience and a winning mentality,” De Zerbi said. “He has consistently performed at the highest level throughout his career and will be an important figure for us both on and off the pitch.”
Robertson joined Liverpool from Hull City in 2017 and went on to become one of the club’s most influential players. During his time at Anfield, he made 378 appearances and helped the team win two Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League. He also lifted the FA Cup and won the League Cup on two occasions.
On the international stage, Robertson remains a key figure for Scotland, earning 92 caps and captaining his country at this summer’s World Cup.
Tottenham sporting director Johan Lange also welcomed the signing, highlighting Robertson’s achievements and character.
“Andy has demonstrated outstanding quality, professionalism and leadership throughout his career,” Lange said. “His experience of competing for and winning major trophies will be a huge asset to our squad. We believe his mentality and ambition align perfectly with the direction of the club, and we are delighted to welcome him to Tottenham.”
