More than a decade ago, Nollywood actor Jide Awobona launched an initiative called Complex Free, a project dedicated to empowering secondary school students by building their confidence, instilling responsibility, and helping them stay focused on their educational and career goals.
After years of being on hold, that vision has returned with renewed purpose and a fresh identity. On May 5, 2026, the initiative officially relaunched as WE RISE.
For Jide, there was no better place to restart this journey than Amuwo Odofin Secondary School, Mile 2, his alma mater and the place where his personal journey began.
Returning to the school was an emotional experience. The warm reception he received brought back a flood of memories from his school days. While many things have changed over the years, some parts of the school remain exactly as they were 26 years ago, making the visit both humbling and deeply nostalgic.

Speaking on the motivation behind the project, Jide emphasized that giving back should not be postponed until one becomes wealthy.
“I don’t want to wait until I become very rich before giving back. There’s nothing wrong with starting small and supporting your roots with the little you have. Impact doesn’t always begin with abundance; it begins with willingness.”
The day was made even more special by the support of friends and fellow alumni. Jide expressed heartfelt gratitude to his friend and former schoolmate, Joshua, for ensuring the outing was seamless and successful. He also appreciated alumni Segun and Alake, who heard about the visit and showed up to lend their support.
When Joshua previously shared photographs of the school’s deteriorating structures and worn-out blackboards, Jide knew he had to do something.
“I couldn’t fix everything at once, but I fixed what I could. More importantly, I’ve made a promise to return and do even more.”

He also extended special appreciation to Mr. Yinka for his moral support and for helping facilitate partnerships with brands that provided take-home gifts for the students. Thanks to the generosity of Indomie, Minimie Chin Chin, and Colgate, students left with valuable items and memorable experiences.
Jide further acknowledged the dedication of his dependable team members — Seyi, Naheem, and Saheed — whose unwavering support continues to make projects like this possible. He also praised his media team, Nuel and Hameed, for their commitment and professionalism.

As WE RISE begins this new chapter, Jide remains committed to expanding its reach and touching more lives across different schools.
“This is only the beginning. More schools will be reached, and more lives will be shaped.”
With a successful relaunch behind him, Jide gives thanks to God for a memorable and impactful outing and looks forward to the next phase of the WE RISE movement.
