The battle for the Ekiti State governorship has entered a decisive phase as incumbent Governor Biodun Oyebanji seeks a historic second term against strong challengers, including Wole Oluyede and Dare Bejide.
With more than one million registered voters expected to cast their ballots across the state, the election is being closely watched as a major test of political strength ahead of the 2027 general elections. Reports indicate that while several candidates are on the ballot, political observers view the contest as largely revolving around Oyebanji and his closest rivals.
Oyebanji, who was elected governor in 2022, is banking on his administration’s record in governance, infrastructure and public service delivery to secure another four-year mandate. His campaign has focused on continuity and the consolidation of ongoing development projects across the state.
However, opposition candidates Oluyede and Bejide have mounted strong campaigns, promising alternative leadership and policy directions aimed at winning over voters dissatisfied with the status quo. Their campaigns have intensified political competition across the 16 local government areas of the state.
Security agencies and electoral officials have assured residents of adequate arrangements for a peaceful, free and credible poll, while election observers have called for vigilance against vote-buying and other practices that could undermine the integrity of the process.
As voting gets underway, all eyes are on Ekiti to see whether Oyebanji can make history with a second term victory or whether the opposition can spring a surprise and reshape the state’s political landscape.
